You may have already heard about CBD oil and its many wonderful benefits. With the legalization of marijuana in Canada, there is now a selection of CBD products available on the market, including CBD oil for dogs and cats to treat pain, anxiety, to control seizures and more in the family pet.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is another active compound and the most well-known, due to its psychoactive properties (the stuff that gets you ‘high’).
Essentially, CBD is non-psychoactive but has a number of the same medical benefits as THC. This means you can take advantage of the therapeutic benefits for your pet without being concerned they will have the “stoned” feeling that goes with THC – which obviously would not be pleasant for a dog or cat. In fact, most CBD products are derived from hemp and not from marijuana.
Although there is not a lot of study-based scientific evidence of the affects of CBD oil in pets, what scientists do know is that CBD and other cannabinoids work on your dog’s endocannabinoid system, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state.
The endocannabinoid system is like a messenger system in your dog. It plays an important role in your dog’s nervous and hormone systems. The endocannabinoids in CBD are very similar to those in your dog’s body and that’s how CBD works … it stimulates the receptors in your dog’s nervous system, digestive system, immune system and brain.
There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggesting that CBD can treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as helping to control seizures. CBD is also used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits.
Again, there’s not a lot of scientific data on the side effects of CBD usage for dogs, there are potential side effects based on how very high doses of CBD affects humans. To minimize any potential side effects, make sure you are following the proper dosage.
Some possible signs of overdose to watch for:
- Dry mouth: Research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. For
dogs, this would manifest as an increased thirst.
- Lowered blood pressure: High doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even though the drop is small, it might create a brief feeling of light-headedness.
- Drowsiness: Dog owners have used CBD to treat anxiety. The calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.
When used correctly, CBD is generally considered to be safe and these side effects are extremely rare. This is why so many owners are seeking CBD, as a natural alternative to pharmaceuticals for both healing and well-being of their pets.
